Number of Pages

  • How to calculate the number of pages

Electronic or handwritten

To determine the number of pages for a book you need to know the number of characters included in your text. Characters are all the letters and spaces included in your document.

The easiest way to do this, in the event you are working with a word document in your computer, is to go to “Tools”, and select “count words”. Automatically you’ll find out how many characters your document has. You have to select the option that includes characters with spaces, and the option “foot notes” also needs to be marked.

We provide here a chart for you to see how many characters will fit into each page of a finished book, so by dividing the number of characters that your document has by the number of characters that fits into a page you’ll be able to have an estimate of the final number of pages your book needs.

You need to be aware of the fact that if your book includes images, charts or pictures, the program will not count them as characters, so you have to consider them separately and calculate how many of these pictures fit into each page.  We advise you to add 8 more pages to your final number (white pages, index, inscriptions, etc.).

In the event you don’t have a digitalized version of your document, you have to estimate the number of characters manually by counting the characters in one line and then multiplying that number for the amount of lines you have in a page. Then, by multiplying that number by the total amount of pages, you’ll be able to get a good estimate of the total amount of characters included in your document.

Using the following charts, and regardless of the size of the page (letter, A4, etc.), you can estimate the number of pages for your final book. The charts provide specific information regarding number of characters and lines per page using Times New Roman font for different letter sizes. If you chose prose for your book, the important column is the one that states characters per page, if you chose verse; the column is lines per page.
